Good-value places to eat in Barcelona: the Mediterránea menu
Mediterránea is the restaurant at Hotel Zenit on Carrer de Santaló, in Sant Gervasi. The menu runs from starters to share and salads big enough for a meal to rice dishes, meat, fish of the day and desserts. Prices are on the menu; here's how to put it together to eat well, whatever you're after.

Hearty mains that make a meal on their own
If you want one dish that's a whole meal on its own, the Milanesa a la Napolitana with chips is one of the house favourites: made with veal or chicken, it comes topped with melted ham and cheese, with the chips on the side. Along the same lines are the Pollo a la Catalana, chicken stewed with prunes and pine nuts, and the Entrecot de Ternera with a vegetable gratin. One of these plus a starter in the middle of the table sorts out lunch for two without over-ordering.

Salads that make a proper lunch
The César comes with lettuce, chicken, Parmesan and Caesar dressing, and it's substantial enough to have on its own. In the same section you'll find the Mix de verdes with goat's cheese, the Mediterránea with tuna and the Tartar de tomate y aguacate. On a weekday lunchtime, a salad and the Crema del día (soup of the day) make a light meal; if there are two of you, share a salad and then order a main each.

Something to share, then a main
Patatas Bravas or the creamy Croquetas de Ibérico y Cocido for the table, then a main each. It works well for a meal for two or three.
One rice dish for the whole table
The paellas, the arroz negro (black rice with squid ink) and the fideuá are ordered to share, so for a group the rice becomes everyone's main course. Ask your waiter how much it comes to before ordering.
The daily dishes
The Crema del día, Pasta del día, Pescado del día and Postre del día change regularly. Ask what's on when you sit down: they're how you get something different even if you come often.
Coming with children
The children's menu has a Hamburguesa de Ternera and an Escalopa de Pollo, so kids get their own plate and you don't need to order an adult dish for them to share.
