Rice, fideuá and risotto

Where to eat paella and rice dishes in Barcelona

At Mediterránea, the restaurant at Hotel Zenit on Carrer de Santaló in Sant Gervasi, the rice section of the menu has six dishes: three paellas, black rice, seafood fideuá and a mushroom risotto. Here's how they differ, which ones work if someone at the table doesn't eat seafood, and how to combine them for sharing.

How to choose

Seafood, vegetable or surf and turf rice

The quickest way to choose is by the main ingredient. For seafood there's the Paella Mediterránea, the Arroz negro con Mariscos (black rice with squid ink and seafood) and the Fideuá de Mariscos. With no fish or seafood, you have the Paella de Verduras de temporada and the Risotto cremoso de Setas. The Paella Mar y Montaña puts seafood and meat in the same pan, and it usually wins over a table where everyone wants something different.

The same section includes the Pasta del día, which changes daily: ask your waiter what's on when you sit down.

Black rice

Black rice or seafood paella: which to order

The Arroz negro con Mariscos and the Paella Mediterránea are two of the house favourites, and the difference lies in the stock. The black rice is made with squid ink, which gives it its colour and a deeper taste of the sea; the Mediterránea is the classic seafood paella, milder in flavour. One guest who ordered both for his table wrote that they were delicious and that the black one was his favourite. If there are a few of you, order one of each and see for yourselves.

More about the black rice

Seafood fideuá and mushroom risotto

What fideuá is

It's cooked like a seafood paella, but with thin noodles instead of rice. The seafood flavour is similar and the texture changes, so it suits anyone who wants seafood without quite so much rice.

When to order it

It works as a second dish for the table when there's already a paella: you try both without doubling up. And if someone doesn't fancy rice, the fideuá lets them share the same dish as everyone else.

The mushroom risotto

The Risotto cremoso de Setas is the Italian-style rice dish on the menu: creamy, with mixed mushrooms and no seafood. It's a good pick for anyone who'd rather have a plate to themselves than share a paella.

Risotto or vegetable paella

Both are free of meat and fish, but you order them differently. The Paella de Verduras de temporada is shared in the middle of the table and changes with the season; the risotto is creamy and served as an individual dish.

Rice dishes: frequently asked questions

Ask when you order: your waiter will tell you how many each rice dish serves and how many to order, depending on how many of you there are and whether you're having starters. If you're coming as a group, call us on 932 411 800 beforehand.

Yes. Each rice dish is ordered separately from the menu, so you can combine, say, a seafood paella with a vegetable one, or a black rice with a fideuá, and share both.

Yes: the Paella de Verduras de temporada and the Risotto cremoso de Setas. If you're strictly vegetarian or vegan, ask the staff before ordering and they'll explain how each one is made.

Something light to share in the middle: Patatas Bravas, Calamares a la Andaluza or the Croquetas cremosas de Ibérico y Cocido. Two or three plates for the table are enough before a rice dish.
